It sounds simple: take a shower that lasts four minutes or less. But why 4 minutes?

Water isn’t just something that comes out of a tap; it’s our most precious shared resource. While the Earth is covered in water, only a tiny fraction is fresh and accessible. As populations grows and climates shift, the strain on this resource mis increasing significantly.

When we take long showers, we aren’t just washing; we are consuming massive amounts of treated, heated water. It’s an easy, daily habit that, when multiplied by millions of people, has a monumental impact. Did you know that home water heating emissions are roughly equal to the global aviation industry or roughly 4% of global emissions.

Average shower times vary around the world with 8-12 minutes being common. For some a 20 minute shower, sometimes more than once a day is typical.

The 4-minute limit is our collective "line in the sand." It’s an achievable goal that changes everything.

Many people think they can't shower in 4 minutes, but its much easier than your think if you're mindful when showering. After you've done it for a while, you'll realise just how long 4 minutes is.

Shorter Showers = Big Wins For You, Your Community And The Planet

Making the switch to 4-minute showers isn't just about sacrifice; it's about unlocking a wave of benefits.

Lower Bills. Less water used and less energy needed to heat that water (one of the biggest energy expenses in a home).

Health. Shorter cooler showers are better for your skin because they don't strip away natural, protective oils (sebum). Cooler water helps soothe, tighten pores, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation, which is beneficial for skin.

Environment. Every minute saved keeps huge amounts of fresh water in rivers and ecosystems where its needed.

Resilience. When everyone reduces demand, our shared reservoirs and water tables stay healthier, protecting the community during dry spells.

Infrastructure: Less water treated means deferred capital investments in costly infrastructure - helping keeps rates down.

Reducing Carbon. A huge amount of energy is required to produce, treat, pump, pressurise, heat water, let alone treating wastewater. Shorter showers directly translate to less energy consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

Environmental Impact

4 minute showers help preserve water sources, reduce carbon emissions and minimise the environmental impact of excessive water usage. By taking shorter showers, you actively participate in environmental protection and contribute to a healthier planet.

Tips for 4 minute showering

Get ready

Get what you need to shower such as shampoo and soaps, towels etc and take off your clothes before running the water.

It typically takes 15 to 30 seconds seconds for the water temperature to heat up. Stand ready to get into the shower when the temperature is right. Avoid wander ingoff to do something else while the water is running.

Create a simple routine

A simple, quick and memorable routine works well for many people:
1. Get  wet
2. Shampoo hair

3. Soap up and wash
4. Rinse hair and condition5. Rinse all over

Part of your routine can be to sing along to a 4 minute song. Select one from our favourite shower playlist on Spotify.

Avoid brushing teeth and shaving

These are best done at a hand basin to avoid wasting water. Use the shower to warm and soften your skin, but do these activities after your shower. If you prefer to shave while in the shower, switch off the water until you're done and then rinse off.

Avoid play

Avoid playing in the shower while the water is running. If your kids want to play in the shower fill a bucket and switch off the water or run a bath. Use the educational video's like ShowerCow to teach your kids about 4 minute showers.

2 in 1 shampoo products are a great way to speed up showering and remove an additional step that uses more (and water).

Traditional shower timers are generally ineffective. Most of the time we forget to turn them on each time we shower.
Get a smart shower timer like "ShowerStar" which starts automatically when you turn the water on and which provides prompts through your shower.
